How My Journey Began

When I left my small hometown of Cartersville, GA to go to college in the inner city of Washington, DC my world changed drastically. I began the most amazing journey imaginable. One that continues to exceed my expectations everyday. That journey has afforded me with so many wonderful opportunities. Meeting people from around the globe has taught me so much. Learning about their experiences and perspectives on life has shaped my personal and professional beliefs in a profound way. As a result, I now have a greater appreciation and respect for each person’s story. I recognize that everyone’s path in life is different and I understand the importance of embracing each person’s uniqueness and using it to help them flourish.

Intuition, Empathy and Understanding

It has always been easy for me to see life from other people’s perspective. However, it wasn’t until I entered graduate school that I realized that much of what came naturally for me was a valuable therapeutic skill that had to be taught and cultivated in others. My natural curiosity about people and concern for their welfare has made it easy for me to actively listen to my clients and serve them with empathy and compassion.

Cultivating my cultural consciousness - becoming a culturally conscious counselor

I believe that your cultural backdrop can be a key piece of the puzzle to help to better understand what may be getting in the way of you moving forward. Therefore, I incorporate those elements into my treatment when relevant. I’ve learned so much throughout my travels to over 25 countries and islands, but what strikes me the most is the fact that there are so many commonalities amongst people from various backgrounds. From England to Hawaii, we all strive for many of the same things in life, despite our cultural and regional differences. Most of the things that we do in our lives are done to relieve some type of discomfort or suffering, so we are constantly seeking ways to bring more joy into our lives. However, sometimes the methods that we’ve used in the past are ineffective. I want to help you to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Let’s work together to improve your psychological fitness so that you can be more resilient when facing life’s challenges!
